Landscaping in Melbourne

Two landscapers can look at the same backyard and quote for quite different gardens. Asking each the same questions shows what every quote is really for.

Questions to ask each business, with a column for each of three quotes
Ask each businessQuote AQuote BQuote C
BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Will you draw up a plan, and is it charged separately?Ask if the plan is yours to keep when someone else builds the garden.
02Which materials are in the quote?Ask for the paving, timber or stone by name, so you can compare like with like.
03Which plants, and at what size?Small plants cost less but take longer to fill a bed.
04Does the price include preparing the soil?Removing old turf, levelling and adding new soil are often extra.
05How will water drain from paved and planted areas?Listen for a plan, not a promise to sort it out later.
06Do you take away the soil and green waste? And whether bins or a truck for it are in the price.
07Will any part of the job need approval, and who applies for it?Ask them to name what it is.
08When could you start, and how many days on site?Ask what happens to the timeline in a wet week.
09Do the plants and the work come with a warranty?Ask what you need to do, such as watering, to keep it.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From melbournelandscaping.com.au, a concept page.

What changes the price

The ground itself often decides more than the design. A slope, clay soil or poor access for machinery can add days, and a quote made without a site visit may not have allowed for them.

Materials come next. Ask each landscaper to name what they would use and to price the same choice, then ask what a cheaper or dearer alternative would change.

Before anyone visits

Decide how you want to use the garden: somewhere to sit, room for children to play, a vegetable patch, or a space that needs little care. A landscaper can quote better for a use than for a picture.

Collect a few photos of gardens you like, and note which parts of the yard get sun in the morning and which in the afternoon.
